What is Reborning?

The art of reborning takes a doll kit - which consists of a vinyl doll head, arms, legs, and a cloth body - and turns it into a doll that looks so incredibly life-like many would believe its a real baby. Let me explain to you what it is like for me to create a newborn baby from a doll kit... I get to take plain looking vinyl doll parts and using heat set paints I turn the vinyl pieces into the most amazing, life-like, realistic newborn babies I have ever seen! I have learned to paint realistic veins, broken capillaries, newborn skin markings and even "stork bites" on the vinyl pieces. I give the babies fingernail and toenail manicures just like a real newborn baby would have. I take needles and micro root baby-soft mohair into the vinyl scalp. Truly this is a labor of love!  I even weight the body to make it feel like a real baby and leave the head floppy so you have to support it, just like you would support a real baby's head. 

The joy this art form has given me is unexplainable. With each baby I know I have really created a unique one-of-a-kind piece of art, a collectible that can be passed down from generation to generation and be here long after I am gone. The response I get from others is astounding! I sometimes forget just how real they look because I created them but then others say, "Oh my goodness I thought that baby was real!" I've had people say, "Why isn't your baby in a car seat?" I've even had people say "What? You made that? But look you can see the veins!" It gives me a feeling of pride, accomplishment, excitement, and uniqueness.
